Abstract

In the contemporary banking environment, regulatory compliance has become an essential but resource-intensive requirement, often perceived as a constraint on strategic flexibility. This study conceptually examines the transformation of regulatory compliance into competitive advantage through strategic risk management in the banking sector. Drawing on a systematic review and qualitative synthesis of academic literature and regulatory guidance published between last five years, the paper explores how risk management practices aligned with regulatory expectations can enhance organizational resilience, strategic agility, and long-term performance. The analysis highlights that banks adopting proactive, integrated risk management approaches are better positioned to leverage compliance requirements as strategic resources rather than operational burdens. By reframing risk management as a strategic function, banks can strengthen governance, improve stakeholder confidence, and achieve sustainable competitive positioning. This study contributes to the banking risk literature by providing a conceptual framework that links regulatory compliance, risk governance, and competitive advantage, offering insights for both banking practitioners and regulators in an increasingly complex risk environment.
